Blackpool Model Village

Blackpool's Model Village is set in 2 ½  acres of wonderful gardens. The Blackpool Model Village was originally designed and built in the 60's to provide a beautiful tranquil attraction to give people a break from the busy noisier attractions Blackpool has to offer.
The models are all hand crafted and depict buildings and scenes of Britain's past. From the grand church, the harbor, the cricket match, the windmill to the historic caravan park. Each model is set in its own distinctive area of landscaped gardens.
You can collect a quiz book from the visitor centre, this asks questions to stimulate and challenge children to keep them occupied during your visit.
You will have to look very carefully to spot all the hidden details that have been created, there is even a prisoner absailing a wall in an attempt to escape the prison!
When you arrive at the visitors centre you can then take a leisurely stroll through the Model Village in Blackpool, every corner you turn there is a different attraction to view. Some of the models depict historic buildings such as the tudor mansions. There is even a fort overlooking some of the waterways that flow around the villages. There is a lovely little harbor with a lighthouse and crane to unload the ships. You may also see a watermill, a suspension bridge, a wedding, a canoeist and many other interesting things.

Blackpool Stanley Park

Stanley Park was started in 1920 when the Mayor of Blackpool and Sir Albert Parkinson purchased a large area of land on the out skirts of town. Later Blackpool Council purchased additional land and took over the project
The design of the park was given to a local architect who was assisted by Dr Mackenzie who took the responsibility to design the golf course. Dr Mackenzie had previously designed golf courses at Blackpool North Shore and at Lytham and St Annes.
The construction work was completed and the park opened to the public on 2nd October 1926 by Lord Derby, Sir George Edward Villiers Stanley, hense Stanley Park.
The park is a beautiful example of a Victorian park and as such it its national importance was recognised and it was granted a Grade II Listing.
Currently some of the historic gardens are under going refurbishment to bring them back to their former glory.
The park is designed around a central Italian garden and the main paths radiate out from this.
The park is divided into four main areas: The Eastern quarter, The Northern quarter, The Western quarter and the Southern quarter.

Blackpool Zoo

Blackpool Zoo is home to over 1500 animals from the four corners of the world. The Zoo was built in 1972 on the former Blackpool Airport site. Blackpool used to have a Zoo in the Tower but in 1969 this closed down, Blackpool Council decided that it should have a zoological collection for the publics pleasure. At the time the zoo site was also considered for a horse racing track, a speedway, a Formula 1 circuit and even Euro Disney. Euro Disney was almost situated on the present Zoo site but pressure from local attractions persuaded the council to press on with a Zoo. Finally in July 1972 the Blackpool Zoo was opened to the public by Johnny Morris.
At this time the Zoo had a small collection of animals consisting off: 2 Elephants, 3 Rhinos, 2 Giraffes, Sea Lions, Gorillas, Chimps, Orangutans, Lions and 2 giant tortoises. The original air traffic buildings became the home for the educational buildings and all the associated uses needed. It was designed as a 3 stage project for the 100 acre site but due to financial pressures it only ever used 32 acres of the site. After 15 years giraffes are back at the zoo. A new enclosure has been constructed and the giraffes have arrived.
Blackpool Zoo Tickets are available to purchase online.
In 2010 Blackpool Zoo invested £1,000,000 in enhancing the Zoo. With a new walk through path going through the wallabys enclosure. They have also refurbished the Sea Lion enclosure. It looks great with huge glass panels and a seating area so you can watch the Sea Lions performing. They are very intelligent and can balance balls, jump through hoops and catch rings on their necks. Khaled the head trainer and his team work with the Sea Lions using positive re-enforcement to teach the Sea Lions new ´tricks´.
